We are excited to announce the Agile BioFoundry’s (ABF) 2023 Industry Listening Day, to be held on July 31, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Pacific Time (12:00 pm – 4:00 pm Eastern Time) at Emery Station East (5885 Hollis Street, 4th Floor, Emeryville, CA.) Funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO), ABF aims to develop biomanufacturing tools, processes, and partnerships that enable sustainable industrial production of renewable fuels and chemicals for the nation.
Attendees will learn about ABF’s strategy to support US biomanufacturing and current industry needs, preview ABF’s new sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and biochemical focus areas, and share views on how ABF can help the community further their research as it relates to industry decarbonization and the advancement of SAFs, chemicals, and tools.

- Dr. Gayle Bentley is a technology manager for the Conversion Program in the Bioenergy Technologies Office at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). She manages a portfolio of research and development projects that improve the production of renewable biofuels and biochemicals, and is involved in the Plastics Innovation Challenge. Prior to DOE, Gayle was a postdoctoral researcher at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory where she engineered microorganisms to produce value-added chemicals, and was granted a Laboratory Directed Research and Development award to develop a novel genetic engineering technology. Gayle completed her doctorate in Molecular Microbiology and Microbial Pathogenesis from Washington University in St. Louis, and both a bachelor’s degree in microbiology and a master’s degree in public health from The University of Arizona.
- Nathan J. Hillson is the Department Head of BioDesign at Berkeley Lab. He received his PhD in Biophysics from Harvard Medical School in 2004. At Berkeley Lab, he currently leads the continuous development and maintenance of synthetic biology software infrastructure and the operation of DIVA DNA construction and sequence validation services. Nathan is the Principal Investigator of the Agile BioFoundry and leads its Capabilities sub-task.
- Robin Johnston works in the Biosciences Area at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where she serves as the Biosciences Strategic Industry Engagements and Entrepreneurship Lead. She also serves as the Director of Commercialization for the Joint BioEnergy Institute. She has an undergraduate degree in Chemistry from the University of Virginia and a graduate degree in Science, Technology, and Public Policy from The George Washington University. Robin co-leads the Agile BioFoundry’s business development and partnering agreements efforts.
- Angela Tarver works in the Biosciences Area at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), where she serves as Program Manager for the Agile BioFoundry. She received her Master’s in Molecular Biology and Microbiology from California State University, Hayward in 2004. In her role with the Agile BioFoundry, Angela helps manage ongoing collaborations, as well as funding opportunities, and works with teams to further synthetic biology partnerships within academia and industry.
